Reflections from the First Class: Sue (Sam) Thompson
Morrison '73, M'74

Sue is pictured here (second row, third from left)
with other members of the Founders Class at the 40th Celebration.
My cubicle had a dresser, straight chair, small oval rug, and iron bed
with straw mattress. There was a bare light bulb mounted to the wall above
a sealed door, and the wood trim was painted hot pink. I soon found
another room that had a wardrobe and a low, padded bench. Three walls had
a psychedelic forest and animals, and the fourth wall had silhouettes of two
guitar players. The straw mattresses were replaced, but it took a while.
We tried to create a student government, but we ended up with a
petition system, where an individual could post an idea, and if enough others
signed it, things could change. We held a dance at a local hall. It
was advertised as a Thanksgiving Dance and then had to let the locals know it
was not a religious event. We were advised to hire the worst band
and best disco we could find, so that people would dance to the records and then
stand around and complain about the band while they spent more on beer.
There was a coal strike that winter, and electricity was rationed
nation-wide. Three days a week the power was sure to be on; two days the
power was sure to be off; two days the power might or might not be on. We
held classes by candle light.

Harlaxton 40th Anniversary Reunion Weekend at UE: What
a Time!

Class of 1979-80 darts
tournament, 40th Anniversary Reunion Weekend
Over
200 Harlaxton alumni from as far away as Arizona, California, Oregon and even
Turkey enjoyed a wonderful weekend at UE celebrating the 40th anniversary of
Harlaxton College. Informational sessions were held about the manor from
historical and engineering points of view. Stories were swapped and
comparisons made between classes. We all agree that the current students
don’t know how great they have it!
Keeping with Harlaxton tradition a whole lot of socializing happened
that weekend as well. A gallery of photos from the weekend is now
available online – just visit
http://www.evansville.edu/harlaxtonsociety/. The information sessions
were videotaped by recent Harlaxton student Michael Armanno and are now
available on the Harlaxton Gallery at
http://www.evansville.edu/harlaxtonsociety/gallery.cfm.

How You Can Help Harlaxton
Harlaxton 40th Reunion Gift Options
In honor of Harlaxton College’s 40th Reunion, you have the option of giving
to three funds: the Harlaxton Annual Fund, the
Harlaxton Society Endowed Scholarship, and/or the Lion Terrace
Project. Gifts to any or all of these funds ensure that the University
of Evansville can continue to provide the “Harlaxton Experience” for every new
group of students traveling up “the mile”. Please visit
www.evansville.edu/give to make
your gift today, or call the Office of Annual Giving at (812) 488-2273 to make
your gift over the phone.
HARLAXTON COLLEGE ANNUAL FUND
By making a gift to the Harlaxton College
Annual Fund, the manor and its occupants are able to maintain their commitment
to academic excellence and continue to provide life-changing experiences to
every new group of students driving up the mile each semester.
HARLAXTON
SOCIETY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Harlaxton Society Endowed Scholarships are awarded
to deserving UE students who have earned a minimum of a 3.5 GPA and will be
studying at Harlaxton College.
LION TERRACE PROJECT
The Lion Terrace, a
favorite landmark for all Harlaxton visitors, has fallen into disrepair. This is
an important part of the Harlaxton landscape that needs to be saved from total
deterioration! English Heritage, England’s governmental body
dedicated to saving “at risk” historical structures, has awarded Harlaxton
College a matching grant to make the necessary repairs and restorations!
You make a gift to the Lion Terrace Project, and English Heritage
will match it dollar-for-dollar. Don’t miss out--DOUBLE your reunion gift to Harlaxton by supporting the Lion Terrace Project today!
